Why are we doing this?
Obesity, diabetes and asthma are rapidly on the increase in the young population and statistics show that much of this can be attributed to poor diet and lack of exercise. In the last decade, the obesity levels in the 11-15 age group has risen to 24% in boys and 26% in girls. Type II diabetes which was rare in children has risen by 3% in the last 5 years in the under 18 age groups. These shocking statistics show the trend over recent years, but the forecasts for the future are not any better.
Estimates indicate that, if current trends continue, at least one fifth of boys and one third of girls will be obese by 2020. Every year the health service spends at least £2 billion on treating ill health caused by poor diet.
There is a an obvious need for an improvement in provision of information, education and services in this area which is why Sprint-Start aim to provide schools with this help to reverse the worrying trend of children becoming overweight and even obese in their younger years. |
