Healthy Start Workshops
Introduction
Healthy Start is a programme of workshop sessions run by Sprint-Start, aimed at young people attending secondary school.
The purpose of Healthy Start is to assist schools in providing pupils with quality provision that is fun, educational and inspiring. The programme is designed to ideally suit small groups of disaffected pupils that do not usually engage in sporting or extra curricular activity at their school. We have found through our research that a number of schools feel that assistance is required in this area.
The group will benefit from the support of our coaches and also the foundation patron and Olympic Athlete and British 400m record holder, Iwan Thomas MBE.
Sessions
Healthy Start will take place off the school site at Trojans Sports Club, Eastleigh.
As a service to assist schools, the programme can be flexible in how and when the sessions are run, to fit in with timetabling or other factors.
The programme is planned to last 3 weeks (1 session per week) with sessions lasting 2 ½ hours. During these sessions the pupils will receive coaching in a range of sports including Athletics, Hockey, Squash, Football, Rugby and Cricket from experienced, qualified coaches. The emphasis will be on participation and having fun whilst learning new skills.
We can extend the number of sessions that the programme lasts for if required or requested by the school.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of Healthy Start is to give pupils a positive sporting experience that will change their perception of sport and physical exercise which can then be built upon back in their school environment by integrating back into lessons and other activities.
Many young people find that sport is a great motivator and can have very positive impacts on both their academic, physical, mental and sociological development, although in some cases this needs a trigger, such as Healthy Start.
